Gary, my best friend since we were kids, and his family were
pulling out of Florida and moving back home.
He told me he was going to trailer his 1967 Camaro back to Alabama.
After thinking about it a couple of days, I called him back.
I had a different idea.
We'd make a Road Trip out of it, yes I've seen 2 Lane Black
Top too many times.
See, this Camaro had been in both of our families.
Back when I was in high school I had purchased the Camaro for a
landlord that had taken from a group of hippies for rent payment.
Gary and I hotroded the Camaro for a year along the Mississippi Gulf
Coast (we were both in high school)
I then traded the Camaro to an airman for a 1955 Chevy with a big block
in it.
The airman got shipped out and had to many cars, so Gary at the age of
14 purchased the Camaro.
The airman had pulled the engine out and the poor Camaro was in bad
shape.
This
is the day I arrived in Tampa Florida.
We worked on the car for two days to make it as street worthy as we
could.
Here we are planning our trip.
The
approximate route. My friend Gary is working on a more
exact map.
But as you can see, we avoided all speeds above 45 mph,
the idler arm was so lose that above 45 mph she had a bad shake.
Heck, even the lights worked.
Not many creature comforts.
This
is the morning we were leaving.
But we did have a legit tag. And a bald spare tire.
One our our many stops to make sure that everything was still in one piece.
We stopped in Perry Florida. Seems both front tires were worn
to the cord.
We put the spare on one side and purchased a used tire from one of the
local tide shops.
This
is the night we arrived.
These were the second set of tires.
Welcome to Slapout Alabama.
